Office Surgery Facility Inspections: What does it mean? Part 5
December 9, 2025 | By Crystal SanfordGluteal Fat Grafting
Not all Florida registered office surgery facilities perform gluteal fat grafting procedures (Brazilian Butt Lift’s or BBL’s) in their facility, choosing instead to perform those procedures in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center. For those surgeons that do perform gluteal fat grafting procedures in the office surgery setting, Florida has very specific and strict regulations that must be followed.
For those facilities that undergo annual inspections, Department of Health (Department) Inspectors ensure facilities comply with these specific requirements, in addition to all other applicable inspection criteria. These specific requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Surgeons performing gluteal fat grafting procedures must perform in-person examinations of the patient at certain times.
- Surgeons must use ultrasound guidance during the placement and navigation of the cannula.
- Fat is injected only into the subcutaneous space of the patient above the fascia overlying the gluteal muscle.
- Informed consent(s) for delegation of duties is signed and included in the patient file.
- Surgeons must provide direct supervision for any delegated duties.
- Office surgery facilities are required to maintain specific financial responsibility if performing gluteal fat grafting procedures.
- Surgeons must maintain a ratio of one (1) surgeon to one (1) patient during all phases of the procedure.
- The surgeon may not perform or supervise another surgery or procedure simultaneously with a gluteal fat grafting case.
